Kairos² is an artwork by Josefina Nelimarkka. The invisible world of atmospheric aerosol particles is rendered into new views and experiences in augmented reality. Forms, colours and sounds change according to the current state of climate, moment by moment. Art travels everywhere with your device - Kairos² brings the critical events of climate change to your location.

The AR application is constantly powered by real-time scientific data of atmospheric aerosol particles. Each moment of Kairos² is unique because the concentration of aerosols changes very rapidly.

Kairos² is made as a collaboration between art, science and technology. The lifetime, size distribution and consistency of atmospheric aerosol particles play a crucial role in the research of climate change. The real- time data is provided by INAR – Institute for Atmospheric and Earth System Research.

Atmospheric aerosol particles are highly variable both temporally and spatially. Being the hyperflux of climate, yet their influence on the climate system remains partially obscure. Within the invisible, transparent and unknown, the present moment becomes a means to understand the continuous process of climate, and to create one’s own relationship with it.

Start interacting with the air particles by simply moving your device in any direction. When ‘air now’ flashes on screen, the number of aerosols has increased dramatically, whereas ‘slow now’ marks a decrease.
